Bring Your Brain

Compelling Conversations: My Precious Pants and Flood Relief

Wednesday, 22nd September 2010 | 7:00 pm

compellingconversations.gifImagine this … You’re walking by a pond dressed in your expensive Burberry pants and you see a baby drowning. You can save the baby’s life at the cost of ruining your precious pants.

Intuitively, we feel that we have a duty to save the baby’s life, even if it means destroying our favourite pants. Peter Singer, the famous philanthropist and philosopher, extends on this basic instinct to argue that we should give a lot more to relief efforts than we do generally.

Engage in a controversial and thought-provoking discussion with Shajia Sarfraz Haroon on Peter Singer’s views in light of the devastating floods in Pakistan. Shajia is a recent graduate of the University of Toronto with a double major in Philosophy and Human Biology.

Expect an evening of pure argument and lively discussions without the pointless rhetoric or sermons. We will question everything, except your intelligence.
