How We Got Here: Towards recognizing an alternate historical narrative from 1857 to 2011

Thursday, 3rd Feb 2011 | 7:00 pm

Join us at T2F for a talk and conversation with Ajmal Kamal

Ajmal KamalTo make sense of what is happening around us today, we should be able to look at our trajectory over the last 150 years – a period which has made us what we are. There are variables in our social history that have not received the attention that they deserve. Among these is ‘Caste’ or ‘Biradri’, an element of social organization which has arguably played a crucial role in our attempt at nation-building. This, coupled with the process of colonial transformation and its attendant agents of change, seem to have determined what we have become during this period.

This talk is meant to provoke a discussion on whether this alternate historical narrative can be usefully taken as a valid point of view to look at our present and future problems.

Ajmal Kamal edits a quarterly Urdu literary journal “aaj” from Karachi and runs a small publishing house and bookshops.
