Magazine Writing Workshop by Anam Mansuri

  • This course is designed to refine an aspiring journalist’s writing skills according to a globally accepted standard of journalistic writing.
  • Students will be familiarized with different kinds of themes (beats), including fashion, culture, and sports, and will be encouraged to pick their own genre.
  • Students will suggest story ideas which are fresh and current, and then will begin a two month long course on how to shape the article they choose to write – complete with story notes and observations.
  • Students will be taught how to report, research and self-edit their stories, while being guided on how to interview subjects, use quotes correctly and make their story flow.
  • Classes will include guest appearances from celebrities, journalists and artists, and subsequent short profiles will be written and edited in class.
  • In the last class, we will discuss how to pitch a story to renowned publications worldwide, and contacts will be handed out.

About Anam Mansuri

Karachi born writer and editor, Anam Mansuri received an undergraduate degree in Journalism and History from New York University, where her senior thesis was selected as one of the best pieces of journalism produced at NYU that year. She also interned at Details Magazine, a sister publication of GQ and wrote for Black Book Magazine; two premier American lifestyle publications. Anam now resides in Karachi and worked as the editor-in-chief of Women’s Own Magazine. She also writes for Newsweek Pakistan, The Express Tribune and the international news portal, The Daily Beast.
