No State, No Master: A Discussion about Anarchism

Thursday, 6th Jan 2011 | 7:00 pm

AnarchyIn the media today, the term ‘anarchist’ is usually used in a pejorative sense, conjuring up images of bomb-throwing terrorists out to destroy everything. ‘Anarchy’ is used to describe a scenario of total societal chaos.

But …

Anarchism actually refers to a vibrant political tradition and philosophy which sees the removal of social hierarchy and authority as being essential to the quest for social justice and freedom. Perhaps the most well-known aspect of the Anarchist agenda is the demand to abolish the state altogether. Anarchists have also been at the forefront of the movement to establish the 8-hour working day, were involved in the anti-Imperial Ghadar movement of pre-partition India, and are the front line of the Alter-Globalisation movement today.

Join us at T2F for a discussion about the core ideas behind Anarchism and their relevance for Pakistani society. The discussion will be led by Fahad Desmukh, a freelance journalist based in Karachi.
